FEATURE: Yashahime Is on Toonami! Here's What to Look Forward To
Late last year, everyone's favorite feudal fairy tale got a brand new chapter. Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, the sequel to Rumiko Takahashi's Inuyasha, came to streaming services around the world. And now, Toonami viewers will be able to meet Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha: the new generation of time-traveling half-demons.
If the Toonami airing will be your first watch, you've got an amazing ride ahead of you! We won't spoil the roller coaster that's the next generation of Inuyasha — but we can't help but give you at least a little taste of what we loved, and what you have to look forward to.
So, what does Yashahime have in store for you?
Familiar Faces... Kind Of
Make no mistake, Yashahime has its own stars, and those stars have their own story. But if you're hoping for a look-in from Inuyasha and Kagome, you'll absolutely get it. The very beginning of the series gives us a full episode taking place after Inuyasha's finale, giving us a little more context for what's to come.
A few characters show up more regularly, though. Look forward to seeing Kirara, as well as an all-grown-up Kohaku. As for the rest... well, that would be telling.
A Mirrored Story
Yashahime is its own completely original story, but you'll definitely see some familiar plot points from Inuyasha. Hunting for magical jewels? Check. Uniting feudal and modern Japan? Again, check. The crazy things that happen to half-demons once a month? Naturally, check.
That also means you'll get to see how new characters handle familiar challenges. Early on, our new heroines face off against Mistress Three-Eyes — who just happens to be the granddaughter of Mistress Centipede, the first enemy Kagome encountered in Inuyasha.
A Slow-Burn Mystery
If you like your stories to spill the beans immediately, you might have trouble with Yashahime. This series takes its time telling you its secrets... especially the secrets you're really curious about. Like why did Sesshomaru abandon his daughters? What's up with Riku the pirate? Where is everybody, anyway?
And, of course, the question everyone had: who is Towa and Setsuna's mother, and is it who we all think it is? That question gets answered sooner than we expected. But even if we hadn't already known who the other mom and dads were, we would have been able to tell pretty quickly.
Like Parent, Like Child
If there's one thing Yashahime has going for it (and it has several), it's just how on point the new generation is. Towa and Setsuna, the twin daughters of Sesshomaru, couldn't be more dissimilar. But you can still see their dad in both of them. Granted, Setsuna gets most of the attitude while Towa gets the general appearance, but they've both got their dad's demonic fighting skills in them.
As for Moroha, even Kagome's own family can tell who she is on sight. She'sas confident as her mom and as ridiculous as her dad. It's no wonder she and Grandpa Higurashi get along so well when they finally meet.
A Last-Minute Cliffhanger
Yashahime is full of surprises, but they save the biggest ones for the finale. (Don't worry, we're not spilling them — they need to be seen firsthand to be believed, anyway!) You'll get some of the answers you crave by the end of the season, but you'll be left with even more.
Fortunately, a second season is in the works. Things are probably going to be a bit different for our cast when the show returns, but at least we know it will return.
Be sure to tune in to Yashahime on Toonami for the next chapter of the Inuyasha story!
