The final Rebuild of Evangelion movie has been moved out yet again, but we still can't stop thinking about it. A journey that started 26 years ago will be coming to a close sometime in the near future, and we'll say goodbye — perhaps permanently, perhaps not — to characters that we've come to know and love over the years.
And speaking of those characters... have you ever wondered why you gravitate toward certain ones? Especially in a show like Evangelion? Us, too... and in our purely unofficial capacity, we're taking a stab at explaining those preferences. These are pretty on the nose for us, but what about you?
Obviously we've missed out a few characters, because if we loaded in the full cast we'd be here all day. But we've at least got the big hitters. Our results are pretty on point. What about yours?
The star of the show himself, the kid who one day goes from normal school life to getting in the robot, Shinji Ikari is the poster child for early teen confusion. If you lean toward Shinji as your fave, you probably find yourself feeling a lot like him at times: confused, alone, and just wanting a friend who can understand you.
You probably also vibe with moments of existential dread, and we hear you.
Whether Sohryu or Shikinami, Asuka is a strong presence in the world of Evangelion. She has no shortage of problems of her own, but her approach to dealing with them is far different.
If Asuka is your favorite, you're the type who prefers prompt action over hesitation, and honest communication over being overly cautious. Also, we're not saying you're into tall vampire ladies yet, but you're definitely in training for that life.
A recurring fan favorite with a heck of a lot of back story, Rei Ayanami is the darling of at least part of the fandom. She's also absolutely terrifying once you delve into End of Eva, but so is just about everything else.
If Rei is your favorite, Hideaki Anno has a lot of opinions about you... and you're not interested in hearing any of them.
One of the most compelling characters in all of Evangelion, Kaworu also has an enticing story arc. Sometimes it seems to carry over as one continuous timeline from version to version. And while we think we know what he is... do we really?
If Kaworu is your favorite, you appreciate calm and peace, especially in other people. Which doesn't mean you don't love an interesting mystery. If anything, you of all people are most likely to have at least six new theories locked and loaded for this final film.
Last but not least (for this list, anyway), we have Misato — the beer-drinking, penguin-having ops director of NERV. And, especially nowadays, the person we're personally feeling closest to.
If Misato is your favorite... let's be honest. Right now you just want normality, balance, and a drink. And you've probably more than earned it. You have our permission to kick back and relax.
Whatever the final Evangelion film may hold, it's going to mean a lot of changes (and possibly even more mysteries) for our favorite characters. For now, we're looking ahead hopefully. Because at this point, literally anything could happen.
