FEATURE - Five of the Most Terrifying Jutsu in Naruto

We all love Naruto, right? The story of a young ninja destined for greatness, fighting his way up the ranks from scrappy newcomer to Hokage. It's a story of friendship, ambition, and also really scary ninja magic being thrown around by children.

Okay, maybe we're overreacting a little, but honestly we don't think we are. Some of the Jutsu you see throughout the series are absolutely terrifying — either because of what they do to the user, or what they do to their victims. Here's just a handful out of the many that freak us out if we think about them too long.

Taking Out Your Spine and Hitting People with It

Dance of the Clematis: Vine

Kimimaro has a broad collection of weird and horrifying Jutsu, most of which involve doing horrible things to his own actual bones. In particular we're haunted by Dance of the Clematis: Vine. This turns the user's backbone into a spiked whip, which they can lengthen by manipulating the cartilage between the vertebrae.

It's bad enough to think about getting whipped with a spiky backbone, but just musing on this too long from the user's standpoint? Not a Jutsu we're envious of.

Absorbing Corpses

Casualty Puppet

Naruto plays fast and loose with life and death already, even before the Jutsu come into play. Then you introduce something like Casualty Puppet — which is basically becoming the Abzorbaloff from Doctor Who, except the people you're absorbing are already dead. Also, you gain their powers.

It's absolutely horrifying, but also admittedly a power move. Your opponents kill your teammates? Absorb them and fight as a unit. Dead enemies on the battlefield? Steal their powers, see how your opponents like it. It should come as no surprise that Orochimaru is one of the users of this one.

Murder Sand

Gaara

We give Gaara a wide berth, regardless of whether he's in friend mode or foe mode. His sand powers are intense, and he doesn't hesitate to use them. In particular, his Sand Waterfall Funeral is a (literal) killer move.

Basically, once he's trapped you inside a ball of sand, he just... compresses it down and crunches you to death. Or, if he's feeling merciful, he might just break all your bones. Even worse, you only see the action from the outside. Meaning you get to imagine the horror for yourself.

Instant Mummification

Pakura

The Jutsu of Naruto aren't just an exhibition of raw power. They're also a show of creativity, for better or for worse. Take Pakura, who combines two chakra natures to do her Scorch Release attack. What does this do? Well, it instantly sucks all the moisture out of your body and mummifies you.

Pakura has wielded this Jutsu against large groups of people, making ninja jerky on a terrifying scale in a relatively short amount of time.

Eternal Suffering

Tsukuyomi

If beating someone to death with your own spine or crushing people in sand coffins isn't hardcore enough for you, how about just sending them to an unending, illusory world of torment and suffering? Because that's something Itachi Uchiha can and also totally will do.

Tsukuyomi is one of the most powerful Genjutsu in the world of Naruto, letting the user trap their victim in a hallucination where they're tortured and traumatized. With a side of time dilation, they can pack days of this into a few seconds... perfect for a vengeful ninja on the go.

These are just five out of hundreds of Jutsu featured throughout Naruto, many of which are pretty freaky. The takeaway? Don't get on a ninja's bad side.
